Salik on a Rental Car in Dubai: How It Works

Salik is Dubai's electronic toll system. Every car registered in Dubai carries a sticker tag on the windscreen. When you drive under a gate, the tag is read and the toll is deducted from the car's Salik account.

On a rental, that account belongs to the rental company. So the toll is paid instantly by us, then matched to your rental dates and added to your final bill.

There's no cash lane and nothing for you to do while driving. Just drive.

Salik Rates in 2026

  1. Time: Peak: 6–10 a.m. and 4–8 p.m., Monday to Saturday — Rate per crossing (incl. 5% VAT): AED 6.30
  2. Time: Off-peak: 10 a.m.–4 p.m. and 8 p.m.–1 a.m., Monday to Saturday — Rate per crossing (incl. 5% VAT): AED 4.20
  3. Time: Sundays (outside free hours) — Rate per crossing (incl. 5% VAT): AED 4.20
  4. Time: 1 a.m.–6 a.m., every day — Rate per crossing (incl. 5% VAT): Free

Two changes in the last two years explain why older guides show different numbers. Salik introduced peak and off-peak pricing in January 2025, replacing a flat AED 4 fee. Then 5% VAT was added to toll fees from 1 June 2026.

Rates can also change during Ramadan, when Salik publishes a temporary schedule. Check the official Salik website or app if you're renting during the holy month.

What a Typical Rental Week Costs in Tolls

Let's use real numbers. Say you're staying in Dubai Marina and driving to Downtown and back each day.

Depending on your exact route, that trip along Sheikh Zayed Road can cross up to two gates each way. Four crossings a day, mixed peak and off-peak, comes to roughly AED 21 a day, or around AED 150 for a week.

Not huge. But it's real money, especially on scenic drives like the ones in our convertible routes guide, and knowing about it in advance is the difference between "fine" and "what is this?"

Want to cut it? Shift trips outside 6–10 a.m. and 4–8 p.m. That alone saves about a third.

Traffic Fines: How They Reach You

Dubai's roads are monitored by a large network of speed and red-light cameras. When a camera records an offence, the fine is issued to the car's registered owner: the rental company.

At Quick Luxe, here's what happens next:

  1. The fine appears on the vehicle's record, sometimes days or weeks later.
  2. We match the date and time to your rental.
  3. We share the official record with you before you pay.
  4. You settle it by card or another secure method.

Some fines also carry black points or vehicle impoundment. Impoundment on a rental car is a serious and expensive problem, so the safest approach is to treat the posted speed limit as the actual limit.

Our no-deposit guide explains why we bill fines this way instead of freezing a large deposit on your card.

Parking in Dubai With a Rental Car

Public parking in Dubai is managed by Parkin. Paid zones are marked with signs showing hours and rates, and payment is by app, SMS or meter.

A few tips:

  1. Download the Parkin app before you collect the car. You'll need the plate number and plate code from the rental agreement.
  2. Check zone signs carefully. Rates and hours differ by area, and premium areas cost more during peak times.
  3. Don't assume Fridays and Sundays are free. Rules have changed over the years. Read the sign.
  4. Mall and hotel parking is separate. Most malls give free hours; many hotels offer valet.

Parking fines on a rental follow the same path as traffic fines: issued to us, matched to you, billed with evidence.

Abu Dhabi Tolls (Darb)

Driving to Abu Dhabi? The emirate has its own toll system, Darb, separate from Salik. Tolls apply at set times on weekdays. Like Salik, any Darb charges on a rental are matched to your dates and billed after.

Our business traveller's UAE guide covers multi-emirate trips in more detail.

Five Ways to Avoid Surprise Salik Charges on a Rental Car in Dubai

  1. Ask your rental company about admin fees on Salik and fines before booking.
  2. Plan long drives outside peak hours. It saves on tolls and you'll sit in less traffic.
  3. Use navigation that shows speed limits. Limits change quickly on some Dubai roads.
  4. Photograph your parking ticket or app receipt. If a parking fine is disputed, proof helps.
  5. Return fuel at the same level. Not a fine, but it's the other charge people forget. Fuel isn't included in the rental.

What are Salik peak hours?

Peak hours are 6 a.m. to 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., Monday to Saturday. Off-peak hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and 8 p.m. to 1 a.m. Sundays are charged at the off-peak rate.

How is Salik charged on a rental car?

The rental car's Salik tag is read at each gate and the toll is paid from the rental company's account. The crossings are matched to your rental dates and added to your final bill with records.

Do I need my own Salik account to drive a rental car?

No. Every Dubai-registered rental car already has a Salik tag. You don't need to register or top up anything yourself.

How long after my rental can traffic fines appear?

Fines can take days or even weeks to reach the car's record. That's why Quick Luxe matches each fine to your rental dates and shares the official record before billing.

Can I dispute a traffic fine on a rental car?

If you believe a fine is wrong, tell our team as soon as you receive it. We'll share the official record, and we can guide you on the authority's dispute process.

How does parking work with a rental car in Dubai?

Use the Parkin app, SMS or meters in paid zones. You'll need the car's plate number and code. Parking fines on a rental are billed after the rental with the official record.

Are there tolls when driving from Dubai to Abu Dhabi?

Yes. Abu Dhabi has its own toll system called Darb, which charges at set times on weekdays. Any Darb charges are matched to your rental dates and billed afterwards.

Does Salik change during Ramadan?

Yes. Salik usually publishes a temporary schedule during Ramadan with adjusted peak and off-peak times. Check the official Salik website or app if you're renting during the holy month.

Does Quick Luxe charge a deposit to cover fines and tolls?

Quick Luxe normally doesn't take a large deposit. Fines and tolls are billed after the rental with official evidence, so your card isn't frozen during your trip.
