Documents Required to Rent a Car in Dubai: The 2026 Luxury Rental Checklist

Tourists: Documents Required to Rent a Car in Dubai
- Document: Passport — Notes: Original, valid. Copies aren't enough at handover.
- Document: Visit visa or entry stamp — Notes: Shows your legal status as a visitor.
- Document: Home-country driving licence — Notes: Must be valid for the full rental period.
- Document: International Driving Permit (IDP) — Notes: Required for some nationalities. See below.
- Document: Payment card — Notes: Debit or credit card accepted at Quick Luxe.
Do You Need an International Driving Permit?
This depends on where your licence was issued.
The UAE allows visitors from a list of countries to drive with their home licence alone. The list typically includes GCC countries, the UK, the US, Canada, Australia, most EU countries, Japan and several others. Visitors from countries not on the list need an IDP alongside their home licence.
The list is set by UAE authorities and can change. So the rule we give every customer is simple: check with us before you fly. Send us a photo of your licence on WhatsApp (+971 50 507 9801) and we'll confirm in minutes.
And get the IDP in your home country before you travel. It can't be issued here for a foreign licence.
UAE Residents: Documents Required to Rent a Car in Dubai
- Document: Emirates ID — Notes: Original, valid.
- Document: UAE driving licence — Notes: Required once you hold residency.
- Document: Payment card — Notes: Debit or credit card.
The catch: once you become a UAE resident, your home licence generally stops being valid for driving here. New residents sometimes try to rent with their foreign licence after their visa is stamped. That won't work.
If you've just moved and your UAE licence isn't ready, talk to us about options. Our monthly rental guide covers what new arrivals usually do.
Age Requirements
- 21 and over: most standard luxury cars, such as the Mercedes-Benz E200 or Range Rover Vogue.
- 25 and over: most supercars, including Ferrari, Lamborghini and McLaren models.
Why the difference? Insurance terms, and the simple fact that 600-plus horsepower needs more experience to handle safely. Some insurers also look at how long you've held your licence.
Payment: Debit vs Credit Card
Many Dubai rental companies insist on a credit card for a security hold. Quick Luxe accepts debit cards and other secure methods, and normally doesn't require a large deposit.
That's a big deal for visitors whose banks don't issue credit cards, or who'd rather not freeze their limit. Our no-deposit guide explains how it works and where exceptions apply.
Additional Drivers
Anyone who drives the car must be named on the rental agreement and bring the same documents as the main driver. This matters for weddings, family trips and group travel. An unnamed driver can void insurance cover if something goes wrong.
Our wedding car guide covers named drivers for event days.
Seven Document Mistakes We See Every Week
- Licence expires mid-rental. It must be valid for the whole period.
- Bringing a photo of the passport. We need the original at handover.
- New resident using a home licence. Once you're a resident, you need a UAE licence.
- Missing IDP. Check your nationality before you fly.
- Name mismatch. The name on the card, licence and passport should match.
- Learner or provisional licence. Not accepted. It must be a full licence.
- Digital-only licence. Some countries issue app-based licences. Bring the physical card too.
Driving Outside Dubai
Your documents cover driving anywhere in the UAE: Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Ras Al Khaimah, Fujairah. Crossing into Oman is different and has restrictions. Talk to our team before planning a cross-border trip.
What Happens at Handover
When the car arrives, at your hotel, home or one of our branches, the process takes about 15 minutes:
- Document check against your booking.
- Rental agreement signed.
- Walk-around of the car, with photos of its condition.
- Quick briefing on the car's controls.
- Keys handed over.
Have your documents ready and it's even quicker. Find our branches on the locations page, or contact us with questions before you book.
